Have I mentioned how much I love fall? I am completely thrilled it is now officially fall! As much as I love living in the south, it is hot and humid for way too long. It is nice to be a little chilly at night and be able to bundle up in a hoodie. This weather has inspired me to work on my epically amazing back yard so I can spend more time out there (more to come on the house).

The other day I tried to start my new cooking adventure, and it was an epic failure, which ended with the fire department at my house. Don't worry, the house just got a little smoky and I did not realize my alarm alerted the authorities, whoops! I was running out of the house to inform the three firemen with axes that there was, in fact, no fire. Talk about complete embarrassment. After this and on the verge of a breakdown, I threw my arms up in the air and made the bf grill the chicken, which was pretty much all we ate.

To redeem myself I made chicken lettuce wraps this week, which turned out much better. I've learned there are two issues I have with cooking. The first is multitasking. There is a flow to cooking and one must have a touch of finesse to do it well. I am good with limited things, but when there are many pieces coming together for a meal I get stressed. The second is the quantity of food you have to buy to make a meal. Sometimes it ends up being more money to cook than to go out, just because you cannot buy the amount you actually need.

For the wraps, I marinated the chicken overnight in a teriyaki sauce and grilled them that day. I cut up the chicken, added sprouts, almonds, carrots, sautéed onions and squash, chow mien noodles and put in the lettuce wrap, drizzled with teriyaki sauce. I had to use iceberg lettuce, although they are typically made with buttered lettuce. I would recommend having a mixed green salad with everything on top. That would be easier to eat and more nutritious.

I find it hard to make myself cook, for so many reasons. It can be challenging for one with limited time and limited funds. However, with the right arsenal I believe anyone can be a good cook. Like most things in life, it just takes time and effort.

When I was living at home, I never learned how to cook things beyond the basics; I can make mean spaghetti and my chocolate chip pie is amazing. I greatly regret not learning more from my mother, because there are not many people who can cook better than her. She can look at her pantry and just whip up something without a recipe, which is amazing to me.

So in an effort to domesticate myself a little more, I am going to commit to cooking two meals a week. Below are some of the cookbooks I have selected for this project, however, I will be using many, many other sources. If you already have an idea of what to cook, the internet is a great place to go for quick ideas.

First of all, apologies for being a horrible blogger. I have been so busy and exhausted these days it has been hard to find write. It is Monday, so it is time to change my lazy ways and start finding time to blog more! I had a great, but short weekend (they are never long enough!). Saturday I finally made it over to the High Museum to check out the Salvador Dali Exhibition. It completely blew me away. I could not believe how versatile Dali was as an artist. He did a little bit of everything, and he did it all very well. My favorite thing in the exhibit was illustrations he did for Don Quixote.

Sunday I went to the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain. Honestly, I was not too impressed with most of the vendors there. My favorite was Ms. Annette's Antique Ceiling Tins. She repurposes antique ceiling tins into beautiful pieces of art.

The highlight of the festival, and the reason I went, was the clogging stage. My roommate and her sister both danced, and they were amazing!

Decatur Book Festival

It's that time of year again! I cannot tell you how excited I am about this year's festival. The folks who put this on do an amazing job coming up with fascinating topics and amazing authors. The biggest problem I have is deciding what events and lectures I will actually go to, because they all sound amazing! I am still recovering from the moving last week and should spend the whole weekend doing work around the house and being productive, but I cannot resist spending a little time checking out the festival. It's all about a balance of work and play, right? I've gone through and picked out some of the lectures I'm interested in going to, but I will have to narrow down to just a few. If you live in this area, I would highly suggest checking out the festival, even if it is just to walk around and check out the scene downtown. Go here for all the info.

Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but I have discovered Google Reader. I felt completely unorganized and overwhelmed with all the blogs I was reading and I wanted a central place to go and get caught up, thus discovering Reader. My intent was to save time, but I believe I now spend more time being immerced in the blogging world. Reading other blogs completely inspires me. There are so many amazingly creative people out there. When things are slow at work, I spend my time perusing all the goodness they offer and imagine that one day I can spend my days making stuff instead of sitting at a desk. Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful for my job and in the scheme of things I am very fortunate, but I don't want to be doing this my whole life. Those bloggers who are making a living doing what they love inspire me to begin trying to do the same.

I decided to start following their lead and begin truly pursuing my passion. So, my goal for the rest of 2010 is to come up with enough pieces to do a show. I have a basic vision, and a lot of work to do. I have one lead and a few other ideas of places to contact. More updates as this develops, but I will have a show by the end of the year, even if it is just at my own house!

I've been a bad blogger lately. I apologize! Starting a new job and being in the process of moving has left me with very little free time and because of this my blog has suffered. Smilebooth!

Smilebooth is the creation of Our Labor Of Love, and quite possibly the most fun photo-taking experience one could ever and will ever have. Smilebooth is the 21st century version of a photobooth, but much cooler. It is quite a local sensation, although I was a Smilebooth virgin until last week.

It is completely fabulous! The best part about Smilebooth- the crazier the photos, the better.

Too many projects, not enough time.

Do you ever get too ambitious? I do it all the time! I have way too many projects I'm working on or thinking about working on... which basically means I just have a big mess. And even though these things start out as fun ideas, they can end up being stressful when not completed. For me, making things is a creative release. I need that or I start to get extremely antsy. Doing projects also has made me more patient (I think) or at least it is helping me become more patient.

Since I am moving into a new house in just a few weeks, I keep coming up with more and more ideas. A big project I'm trying to get started on is making/buying curtains for the many, many windows we have at the new place. I've come up with some basic ideas for the main rooms, but I'm still trying to figure out what all I'm doing.

I love the bunting in the first picture. I want to do simple (possibly shear) panels on the sides with bunting like a valance like in the second picture.

A few other projects I am working on:

I found these at the thrift store for $2.00. I used a little paint and ta-da: chalkboard wall hangings. Yes, it is a much smaller scale then our current chalkboard wall, but they will be fun nonetheless.

I am also in the process of making fabric flowers for either the mantle or dining room table. I've collected some old beer and wine bottles to use as vases. And I have some old serving trays I found at a yard sale that are shaped like flowers that I am going to decoupage, possibly with quotes.

Last but not least, I am refinishing a dining room table and chairs. I am hoping to have all of these projects finished by the end of next weekend, although knowing me, it will probably take longer.

A Year Ago Today...

I cannot believe how fast time flies and how much can happen. A year ago today, I had a conversation about love, talking about the craziness of it and the irrationality that results when one is "in love." At that time I hadn't been in love and I thought it meant to feel all the mushy, gushy feelings in your stomach and you can't stop smiling and you're just happy. Who doesn't love butterflies? To quote a favorite childhood movie: "It's that can't-eat, can't-sleep, reach-for-the-stars, over-the-fence, world-series kind of stuff, right?" Blah!!! What is that? That may be a small, small part of falling in love, but it's not love. It's mainly a chemical response that feels really good, but makes us do crazy things. It's like a Petrarchan sonnet. Petrarch was the father of orginal romance and the sonnet. In the 14th century, he wrote 365 poems professing his love and devotion for Laura, his “true love.” Maybe he is the one to blame for putting all these ideas in our head and creating the genre of modern day romance. Here is a little example of what we're dealing with:

Oh blessed be the day, the month, the year,

the season and the time, the hour, the instant,

the gracious countryside, the place where I was

struck by those two lovely eyes that bound me;

and blessed be the first sweet agony

I felt when I found myself bound to Love,

the bow and all the arrows that have pierced me,

the wounds that reach the bottom of my heart.

And blessed be all of the poetry

I scattered, calling out my lady's name,

and all the sighs, and tears, and the desire;

blessed be all the paper upon which

I earn her fame, and every thought of mine,

only of her, and shared with no one else.

It's beautiful, right? Any women would love to have a man devoted to her on that level, right? This "true love" that has been ingrained in us from literature, music, and culture is a beautiful thing in the context of fiction, but it is a complete mess in the context of reality! We are meant to have passion, a fire inside us that burns and pushes us to really live life. We've all got this passion. Many people don't live life with that passion, I believe that most of the people who don't are afraid. That passion is supposed to be for our life, but it often gets displaced and put toward another person. And when it gets displaced, the response is this thing we have come to believe as love. It puts one completely reliant on another person for their happiness and that opens up a person to all sorts of problems. I love, love, love this quote. To me, it is exactly how a relationship should work.

Ultimately, I think being in love means loving someone more than yourself. It's an unconditional, and sometimes irrational, love. It's not based on how someone makes you feel or what they do, it's based on who they are, good and bad. Really being in love is learning to except someone, faults and all. It's absolutely terrifying, because that kind of love opens you up to pain, a pain that cuts deep. I think it's worth it. I want to believe it is.

Sorry for getting all serious! I've been thinking a lot about relationships and love over the summer and just wanted to share.

Wow, I can't believe it is almost August. This month has flown by so fast. It's scary how that happens sometimes. Life for me has been completely hectic this past week, to say the least. After four months of searching, I have been offered my first post-college, full-time job. I start on Monday, but I am working my other job for a few weeks as well, so I have very little free time. I am going to try to continue to blog, but my posts may be quite sparse until things calm down, so please forgive my absence. I promise once things calm down a little I will begin posting more!

In the meantime, please vote for me on Atlanta Magazine's Head to Toe Contest. It is not showing up right now, but hopefully it will. I am not sure how much long people are allowed to vote, but I know the winner is chosen on August 6. I've enjoyed looking at the other entries and getting style ideas from other ladies in the local area. As I was thinking about what pictures I wanted to submit, I came up with three things that epitomize my style and that I wanted in the pictures: vintage dresses, high-waisted skirts, and scarves. Let's face it, break ups suck! Whether you are doing the breaking up, getting broken up with, or it is a mutual decision, it is not a fun thing to go through. What can help make it a little better- a break up mix! I think a break up mix, like a break up, should be a journey. It should be a combination of sorrow, anger, and acceptance. It was easy for me to come up with the list, partially because I just went through all this recently and spent a good week listening to nothing but sad, depressing music (Bon Iver and Noah and the Whale are great solace for the brokenhearted). I like to pretend that I'm sometimes eloquent, but unfortunately I'm not most of the time. I usually stumble over my words and cannot really say what it is that I want to say. It is precisely for this reason that I love literature and poetry and music. There are people who are truly gifted with words and can turn them into art. They can say exactly what I am feeling inside, but can't express. I love it when people use quotes in a creative way. I came across a new etsy shop that does a great job with this. Local Wisdom Cards does collages featuring different quotes. I want to buy all of these, frame them, and put them on my wall. Until then, I will just have to admire their beauty.

The Lost Art of the Mixtape

Today as I was driving I started thinking about the lost art of the mixtape. One of my dear friends used to always make me mixtapes. They were carefully planned, with the perfect combination of new and familiar. Not only were the tracks well thought out, but the track order was as well. John Cusack addresses this in High Fidelity (if you have not seen this movie, do some immediately).

I very, very rarely listen to mixtapes now. Usually, they are the CDs I put on in my car when my iPhone is dead and I have nothing else. iTunes playlists are the mixtape of the 21st Century. The problem with a playlist is you can easily add hundreds of songs in just a moment and listen to them on shuffle, then the artistic-ness of the process goes away. I am not OK with that. So in an effort to bring back the mixtape, I am going to post weekly "mixtapes." It will be a collection of 12 to 15 tracks, in a particular order and with some kind of theme. Then, if you so choose, you can download the tracks and burn your own mixtape. Be on the lookout this coming week for "Mixtape Monday."

My roommate and I have been looking for a new place to live and we were talking about how we love where we live currently because we can step out our front door and walk places, but then as we continued in the conversation we realized we never actually do that. So today I decided to go for an "epic" walk (I love using that word, although it is completely relative to what I'm talking about and not usually very epic). I wanted to really explore and experience areas I normally just drive past.

I absolutely love this house. It is falling apart and seems vacant, but it is still completely enchanting to me. If it was for sale and I had money, I would love to buy it and restore it to its former beauty.

Even though I have put myself on a book buying freeze, I still could not help but to look at the sale rack.

Chick-Fil-A lemonade is the perfect refreshment after a long walk on a hot day.

I cheated and took Marta home.

I almost made it, but then it started to rain.

I didn't really see anything new or do anything epic, but I was able to slow down and experience some of the beauty that surrounds me everyday that I'm usually too distracted to see.

Work Style

I am in the process of looking for a full-time job, which is a job in and of itself. I have realized looking for a job is a lot like dating. You spend a lot of time developing and updating your resume, making sure it is attractive. Once you are ready, you start looking for jobs. You find a few that are interesting and that you think are well fitting, so you apply. Then you sit and wait, hoping that the employer likes you too. You sit by the phone, just hoping for a call. You wonder, "Why aren't they calling? Don't they like me? Did I do something wrong?" Then you final get a call, and you find out they're interested too. You jump up and down and get all excited. Then you go to the interview, all dressed up with your best foot forward, hoping that they want to make a long-term commitment to you.

I have a few interviews lined up this coming week and I hope that at least one of them wants to make a commitment to me. Being a girl, I've been thinking about how to update my wardrobe to enter the working world. I have some things, but not enough to wear to work on a daily basis. So I have compiled some work appropriate looks from a few films for inspiration.

Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer:

Not only do I love Zooey's style in this film (although I would personally prefer her wardrobe in warmer colors), I love Zooey's style in real life. Everything she wears is extremely feminine with the perfect balance of modern and vintage. She is one person I would absolutely love to go shopping with and then we could have long talks reminiscing about styles of old and indie music (in my perfect world that is far, far from reality).

Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada:

While I have never really been into designer lables, I LOVE all of Anne's outfits in this film, especially that green dress. I might have to make my own version for my next sewing project.

Katherine Heigl in 27 Dress:

This movie is a complete cliche (You've got a woman obsessed with the idea of love and marriage and a man who has been burnt by love and becomes a cynic, but somehow they manage to overcome their differences to fall in love- how sweet!), but I think they did a really good job with Jane's style. She has a casual, approachable look while still being stylish and feminine.

Mandy Moore in Licence to Wed:

In my opinion, Mandy Moore does not have much talent in the acting/musical department, but she definitely knows how to dress. Her character's wardrobe is full of cute dresses, cardigans, and jumpers.

Lastly, I love this collection of vests:

What a great way to add something extra to an otherwise plan outfit!?! I especially like the ones Ginnifer Goodwin wears in He's Just Not That Into You.

4th of July

I love the 4th of July; it is one of my favorite holidays. I have so many fond childhood memories- decorating bikes and donning newly made patriotic outfits in my cousins neighborhood parade, swimming in my grandparents pool, eating hash, watermelon, and peach ice cream, and watching fireworks. Like I said, one of my favorite holidays. Here is a picture of me proudly donning one of those outfits made by my mom. Don't you love the shoes?

The 4th of July as an adult has been much less eventful and for that I am sad. I decided to change that this year and fully embrace the holiday, starting by making my own holiday dress. While in the middle of the project I had a moment of deja vu and remember why I haven't sewn in years- it's frustrating and hard.

My biggest frustration is the directions:

I have never been good with following instructions. The stubborn, strongwilled person inside me thinks I know what is best, but I'm trying to get better about it. However, there were many moments of yelling at the directions, the fabric, the machine. Yes, all inadement objects, I know. There were some road bumps and a few seams had to be riped out and resewn, but I'm pleased to say that I now have a finished product.

I will proudly be wearing this on Sunday, while participating in some of my favorite holiday activities.

Men's Fashion

I have never paid much attention to men's fashion, besides knowing what styles I find attractive. Usually, I am too busy looking at what other women are wearing and getting ideas of how to incorporate new elements into my style. In women's fashion, menswear has become a big trend. I am personally a big fan of the trend, especially when combined in contrast with super feminine touches. Now it seems menswear is being influenced by feminine trends- rompers, skirts, leggings, etc. I am not quite sure how I feel about this.

Exciting things yet to come...

I've been doing some research on upcoming movies, and truthfully, there are not many that look too enticing to me. Although, I've never been a huge fan of big blockbuster movies and this is the time of year they all come out in force. That being said, I do have a weakness for romantic films. Yes, like every other girl, I will go see Eclipse, but I don't have high expectations. While the books are not fine literature, I do think they have some redeeming points (like relationship and emotional development) and when I read them I feel like a young girl lost in the throws of love. The movies, on the other hand, are pure cheese and really do not have any elements that make a good film. See Exhibit A:

While I often feel out of touch with the movie world and have not seen, or completed, many movies that I am ashamed to admit, I tend to gravitate towards independent films. I enjoy the independent genre because I feel like the directors have more artistic freedom and are able to make films that they really believe in, not just ones that will make money. I feel the same way about music; I never listen to the radio (except NPR) and hate pop and top 40. Here are a few indie films I am hoping to see:

1) Please Give. This film is currently out and centers around an antique dealer and her relationships with the people around her.

2) Somewhere. Unfortunately, Sofia Coppela's new film does not come out until the end of the year. I have been impressed with the work of both Coppela and Elle Fanning and I will be anticipating the release.

3) Nowhere Boy. The story before four boys from Liverpool became the biggest band to ever walk the earth. Will be released in October.

Lastly, two last things I am REALLY excited about: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part 1. I love, love, love the worlds of Narnia and Hogworts and cannot wait to see the latest installments.

Sewing Project: 50's style picnic dress

My current project:

I have been sewing for a while, but I have very limited experience in making clothes. Now I'm trying to change that. My initial desire was to be able to create exactly what I wanted instead of having to hunt for it. Unfortunately, you have to scour through multitudes of pattern books to find what you want, so it is a hunt nonetheless.

The project was easier than I thought it would be. Although, all the different kinds of stitches, basting, understitching, and edge-finishing, initially confused me. The good thing is that sewing is like riding a bike, it quickly comes back to you. The biggest challenge was the neckline. When I added the face piece, it felt bulky and did not lay properly. I decided to remove the piece and just do an edge-stitch around the neckline instead. The entire project took about a day.

My next project: a romper. I want something like this one made by Blooming Leopold.

The inception of Sweet Darlin' Designs all started when I needed to come up with a Christmas present for the boyfriend. I needed something creative and unique. Being a tad sentimental, I wanted something personal and related to us. With him and I both being the music lovers that we are, I decided to do something artsy with song lyrics. In the process of coming up with how to personify that idea, I came across some old windows. In an instant, I knew exactly what I wanted to do- a stained glassic mosaic design on the window with alternating panes of mirror to write the lyrics.

The lyrics I chose are from Such Great Heights by the Postal Service. I had the Iron and Wine version in mind when I chose the lyrics, but since the song was actually written by Ben Gibbard, I need to give him some credit. Here are the lyrics I chose to use:

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes

Are mirror images and

When we kiss they're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate

That God himself did make us into

Corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces

From the clay

They will see us waving from such great heights

"Come down now," they'll say

But everything looks perfect from far away

"Come down now," but we'll stay...

So it begins again...

I am officially being lured back into the blogging world. Why? Because blogs are just fun! In the weird limbo point I am at in my life, I need a creative outlet to muse about the random thoughts and ideas running through my head. I am under no false pretenses that I have an extraordinarily exciting life that people actually care to follow, but I do hope that they can enjoy this blog just the same.
